Position Statement:
I
have been a proud Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist for 24 years
and actively involved in Ohio’s advocacy efforts for the past decade. I
have served at the state level on multiple committees, on the Board of
Directors and as President. The most important thing I have learned is
that the advancement of our profession cannot be done alone. It is not
enough to be personally involved as advocates, but we must also inspire
others to join our efforts. We often think that inspiration causes
action, but more frequently, action causes inspiration. This is the “do
something principle.” I feel that inspiring not only CRNAs, but SRNAs
as well is just as, if not more, important. Student nurse anesthetists
have the most to gain and the most to lose if no one advocates. Most
students graduating today will have careers spanning at least three
decades. I have spoken to students at Ohio programs for years and
engaged hundreds of them to join in our advocacy efforts.
I
have practiced in ALL types of anesthesia settings. I have worked in a
strict anesthesia care team model where the physician anesthesiologists
dictated every move. I have worked in a model with physician
anesthesiologists that let me practice to my full scope, and I have
worked independently without physician anesthesiologists. I have worked
in models where anesthesiologist assistants were prevalent and my scope
of practice was lowered to match theirs. I have been an employee, a
1099 private contractor and an owner of an anesthesia group. I have
been an educator, practitioner, and advocate of CRNA practice. I helped
start CRNA organizations and businesses, such as the Society of Opioid
Free Anesthesia (SOFA), Western Reserve Anesthesia Associates (WRAA),
Western Reserve Anesthesia Education (WRAE), and the Block Buddy App
for iPhone and Android. I have learned from all of these collective
experiences and I want to bring those experiences to you and our
organization.
In
Ohio, I have seen the battles our profession faces firsthand amongst
physician groups, hospital organizations, legislators, AAs, and even
within our own CRNA family. Our state organization not only performed
strategic thinking, we actually carried out strategic actions. We set
common goals and we actively executed them. We changed our lobbyist of
25 years; we reorganized our committees; started a new student board,
and we partnered with other organizations to advance our cause. We made
many decisions, some of which were wise, and some that we quickly
learned from and restrategized. The strategic thinking and actions were
carried out as a TEAM. I am very fortunate to have been a part of this
amazing group of state leaders and I look forward to bringing what I
have learned in that experience to the AANA.
If
elected to work for and represent you, I promise to continue making the
AANA a member-centric organization. I will work toward a
high-performing organization that also provides state of the art
education for CRNAs and CRNA prospects. I will advocate and work hard
to provide the opportunity for every member to practice at their full
scope and ability at both the state and national levels.
The
real value in strategic thinking is NOT just in generating ideas or in
making better decisions: it is about building a framework that
future-proofs the AANA and gives us the best chance of achieving
long-term success.
I
am proud to be a CRNA, and this profession has given my family and I
more than I could ever give back to it, but that will not stop me from
trying to give back more than I have received.

for many CRNAs who want to get into the business of anesthesia or need
assistance with existing small anesthesia business. Current Employment: Chief Operating Officer Essential Anesthesia Management 2023-Present; Chief Executive Officer YPS Anesthesia, 2004-23.
Position Statement:
As
an AANA member since I was a student in 1999, I have seen many changes
in our profession and in the AANA. Recently, CRNAs have gained market
share and influence, and the next three-five years will be a critical
time for our profession. We will either continue to expand our
influence or take steps backward, as we will face stiff opposition and
market headwinds.
The
proliferation of anesthesiologist assistants, the organized and
methodical politicization of anesthesia delivery by the American
Society of Anesthesiologists, and the devaluation of our services from
Medicare and commercial payers can negatively impact the future of our
profession going forward. We need leadership representation in the
Board Room who understand these issues, and my 20+ years of executive
business leadership experience has given me a unique perspective that I
can bring to the AANA Executive Board as Vice President.
My
position statement is not one of specific pet projects or an any
specific personal agenda. My plan would be to continue doing what I
have done during my AANA Board tenure to date, which is to lead with
professionalism, transparency, and integrity while bringing my business
experience and perspective to the AANA Board Room to assist the
Board in making the best strategic decisions that we can for the
membership and our profession at large.
We
owe a huge debt of gratitude to previous AANA leaders since its
inception nearly 90 years ago. Many of them sacrificed so much to
advance our practice rights and influence in the healthcare community,
and it is on their shoulders that we all stand daily as proud CRNAs. I
love our profession and have always felt a strong calling to give back
to preserve and grow what we have for the next generation of CRNAs.
Giving
back can be as simple as being an AANA member or giving to your state
and federal PAC and as advanced as volunteering personal time and
effort to be involved in state association governance and national AANA
leadership. I have a long history of doing all the above and I ask for
your vote to allow me to continue to give my time and experience to the
AANA as vice president to help guide where we go as organization for
the next generation of CRNAs!

Position Statement:
CRNA
Colleagues—Without a doubt, serving as a Director on the AANA Board has
been a highlight of my professional career. I am humbled to serve
alongside my dedicated CRNA peers. As an AANA leader, it is my personal
goal to earn the respect of members by engaging all our
professional cross sections.
Over
these past two years, I feel we have made some significant strides. 1.
We have hired a new CEO and AANA staff that will best be able to lead
our association into the future, 2. Not only did we launch, Motion, a
new career exploration platform, but we have also diversified our
revenue streams by investing in this unique opportunity, 3. Rm8, an
innovation lab, was developed to help transform unique healthcare
innovation ideas into realized profitable solutions and, 4. We secured
a seat at the table to testify before the Veterans’ Committee on
Veterans’ Affairs, where our own Jan Setnor, MSN, CRNA, proudly
represented us, strongly advocating on our behalf. With all of that said,
what we have done is nothing compared to what we can do, and there is
work to be done. I am excited to be running for my next term to be your
AANA treasurer.
As
a part of the AANA Executive Board, it is my primary goal to ensure we
are committing to and delivering on the goals identified in our
strategic plan. Within the framework of the strategic plan, bulleted
below are some of the ideas I think are particularly important:
- I
believe it is critical for us to provide novel, innovative ways to
train and engage AANA leaders, both new and seasoned. A good leader
trains their successor, and we must provide solid opportunities to
continue to develop in this arena.
- Many CRNAs enjoy the
networking opportunities offered at our in-person meetings. We need to
continue to develop these meetings so that they are relevant and meet
the needs of our members.
- It is no secret that the current need
for anesthesia providers is high. While we need to to meet workforce
demands, it is essential that we keep training strong CRNA residents.
An opportunity to help educators might be to make compensation
data/resources available so that they can be most effective when
negotiating with academic institutions.
- The AANA needs to
continue to nurture strong communication with both the National Board
of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA)
and Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational
Programs (COA) so that we can all best support the training of our
residents. A solid relationship with our sister organizations will
allow us to synergize our strengths in our respective areas.
- I
was excited that we hired Amy Sherwood as our new chief membership
officer. Part of Amy’s job will be to liaise with state association
executive directors. While our increase in membership dues will
financially help our states, I think having a person dedicated to
working with state staff within the context of membership is necessary
to help attract members, especially newly minted CRNAs. States with
smaller CRNA populations often need creative resourcing options; more
opportunities to resource share is one way I hope state associations
will be able to move into the future.
To
cultivate my own professional curriculum vitae, I commenced a Master of
Health Administration at The George Washington University in Washington
D.C. I am well into the program and feel the content is strongly
relevant to the skillset necessary to serve as a CRNA leader. I am
excited by the opportunity to serve as yourAANA treasurer and flex this
newly acquired knowledge.
If
we have not had an opportunity to connect, please be certain to
introduce yourself at our next AANA gathering or on social media. I
want to earn your vote.

Position Statement:
With
great enthusiasm, I present my candidacy for AANA director. This
commitment to advancing nurse anesthesiology shifts beyond mere
dedication; it is a resolute pledge aligned with the visionary
objectives articulated in the AANA Strategic Plan. From the
nascent stages of my career, I have been immersed in the mission of the
AANA, navigating diverse clinical environments while assuming various
leadership roles. This multifaceted journey has deepened my
appreciation for the unique challenges and diversity inherent in CRNA
practices nationwide and sharpened my strategic acumen.
Armed
with rich experiences garnered from the trenches of clinical practice
and leadership, I am poised to make decisions that resonate across the
membership, catalyzing progress with a blend of insight and foresight.
My leadership vision for our future revolves around a triad of
innovation, advocacy, and collaboration, underscored by a pragmatic
mindset and critical thought processes.
At
the heart of our Strategic Plan lies the imperative to advance
education and professional development—a mission that resonates
profoundly with my professional ethos. My ardent commitment to this
principle translates into a fervor for fostering educational
opportunities, ensuring access to top-tier programs, and
providingcontinuous learning resources. I propose a comprehensive
approach that not only focuses on traditional educational avenues but
explores cutting-edge technologies and partnerships to ensure our
members are at the forefront of advancements in healthcare. Having
served as the chair of the AANA Practice Committee and a member of the
AANA Professional Development Committee, but also as a
clinician-educator, I bring a valued vantage point that enables me to
craft educational strategies that not only meet but exceed the evolving
needs of our membership. I aim to cultivate an environment where CRNAs
are not just adapting to change but driving it.
Diversity,
equity, and inclusion are foundational pillars of the AANA’s values. I
am not merely a proponent but a champion of initiatives cultivating a
diverse and inclusive environment for CRNAs. Collaborating with AANA
members and stakeholders, we will dismantle barriers to inclusivity,
shaping a profession that mirrors the vibrant diversity of our society.
By fostering an environment where every CRNA feels valued and heard, we
strengthen the collective fabric of our association.
Advocacy,
the third cornerstone, has been etched into the structure of my
professional DNA through intentional mentorship and years of dedicated
effort. By engaging policymakers, healthcare organizations, and the
public, I reflect the best interests of CRNAs. I will persistently work
to secure commensurate reimbursement, tackle regulatory challenges, and
boost policies that recognize the indispensable role CRNAs play in
healthcare delivery. Our advocacy efforts will not be confined to the
hallowed halls of legislatures but will permeate every aspect of our
professional landscape. My strategy is not reactive but
anticipatory—proactively identifying and addressing issues before they
become obstacles. Through strategic alliances and targeted campaigns,
we will amplify the unified voice of CRNAs, ensuring our concerns are
heard and heeded.
Collaboration,
the linchpin of strategic success, will be the fourth cornerstone of my
directorship. I will seek opportunities to fortify partnerships with
healthcare organizations, educational institutions, and industry
stakeholders. I envision synergistic partnerships that transcend
boundaries, forging alliances with organizations beyond healthcare.
Through such collaborations, we can magnify the influence of CRNAs,
elevate patient care, and capitalize on successes in our profession. We will position the AANA as a global influencer in shaping the future of healthcare.
In
conclusion, my candidacy is not just an appeal for your vote but an
invitation to join me in shaping a future where the AANA stands as a
trailblazer, a thought leader, and remains an unwavering advocate for
CRNAs. Together, we can surpass the ordinary and usher in an era where
our association continually exceeds expectations. Let us embark on this
transformative journey together through collective strength and guided
by robust leadership to ensure that the AANA continues to thrive while
setting new industry standards. The strategic initiatives outlined may
serve as a guide, but my commitment is to infuse them with a dynamic,
forward-thinking spirit. As a catalyst for progress, I am prepared to
enrich the vitality and growth of our association. My dedication
extends beyond the perimeters of a standard candidacy—it encompasses a
vision for a future where the AANA stands as a beacon of inspiration
and excellence in healthcare. I will serve the AANA membership with
integrity, transparency, and a sincere commitment to our shared mission
and values, and I thank you for your consideration.

Position Statement:
As
a previous AANA Board director and now AANA treasurer, I’ve had the
opportunity to be a part of something very special at the AANA these
past three years as we are now financially and culturally healthier as
a professional organization than we have been in many years. From
hiring a new CEO with tremendous association experience, to expanding
our membership to RNs and other affiliate options, to providing various
states with the resources that they needed to advance and protect
the CRNA profession, to now being within arm’s length of getting a
historic federal win with the VA system, and the list goes on and on.
The common underlyingtheme is that everyone at the AANA is unified and
rowing in the same direction. We are winning in all aspects of the
association and profession, and more wins are on the way!
This
is a true testament to all the leadership and different skillsets that
have been present on the AANA Board during the past couple years. From
me specifically, I’ve been able to bring (and hope to continue to
bring) an extensive background of leadership experience in business
administration, clinical expertise, academics, and legislative advocacy.
I’ve also become well known for bringing in a contagious, high level of
energy to the AANA Board that continuously encourages us to
explore innovative options and maximize our potential as quickly as
possible (hence my Board nickname “Rocket”). In summary, I believe that
continuity in our currentleadership, to whatever extent possible,
would only help further move this organization in an extremely positive
way. For that reason, I’ve decided to run as an AANA Board Director for
one more term. I hope you’ve noticed and felt many of the recent
successes from your AANA Board these past couple years, and I humbly
ask you again for your support for reelection to help keep that
palpable momentum going.

Position Statement:
My
journey in politics began while working in Congress on the House
Banking Committee on the first HIV bill under President Herbert Walker
Bush, inspiring me to become a nurse. This experience in Congress
provides me with a unique insight into the importance and impact of
professional government relations and advocacy. As a dedicated
educator, I have advanced the nurse anesthesiology profession through
my teaching, mentorship, scholarship, and service. As a change agent,
my contribution to service has allowed me to be a role model and mentor
for my students and colleagues. Like my CRNA predecessors, my lifelong
commitment to the profession has been in service at the local,
regional, and national level.
As
an aide in Congress, a CRNA practitioner, and educator, I will continue
to lobby, advocate, and teach the role of the CRNA. My past experiences
have given me a unique insight into government, rural healthcare, and
the complexities of independent practice. I have lectured locally and
regionally on the business of anesthesia.Although the profession has
made momentous strides, we have not reached parity. I am currently
running for director, promoting AANA advocacy in recognizing CRNAs’
high-quality full scope of practice world-class care. My mission is to
advance entrepreneurship attitudes further to think differently. There
is a need for more integrated healthcare delivery, with CRNAs being
integral in dyad leadership arrangements. I will endure this mission
for parity, inclusivity, and transformative change beginning with our
profession, members, and students.
As
an all-inclusive organization, I promise to advocate at the local,
state, and national level to support global change and represent
members’ opinions, ideas, and concerns. I take pride in informing the
public in providing information and resources by achieving the greatest
good. My leadership entails an equitable culture to always maintain a
sense of transparency and communication so each member knows the
consequences and rewards. A culture of equity will be met by having
open discussion, identifying priorities, gaining leadership by
empowering members, and recognizing equity champions. The AANA members
develop and deliver the highest quality, cutting-edge care. As your
director, I understand the importance of “levers” in influencing public
sector performance, open dialogue, performance accountability,
restructuring, and driving change.
The
many roles I’ve held have championed new bylaws, protocols, and
procedures in making impactful change. Nationally, I served on the AANA
Bylaws and Resolutions Committee, serving two terms, and am currently a
team reviewer for the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia
Educational Programs. My passion advances the profession by being a
transformational leader, driving innovation and excellence. In
reflection, I never imagined the impact I have had on my students and
my profession. I am always appreciative and humbled by the
accomplishments of my colleagues, profession, and students. I look
forward to raising awareness of the AANA’s mission, vision, by rallying
with my constituents. Through systems advocacy I will follow three
golden rules: be polite, be prepared, and be persistent. My past
accolades in education and leadership do not limit my ability to
innovate, explore, develop, and mentor students to continue to deliver
high-quality,evidence-based anesthesia care. Successful leadership in
change propagates a culture of excellence in being a transformational
leader driving innovation and excellence for our members. Please allow
me to work with you and be your voice…with much appreciation…Ann

Chief Nurse Anesthetist, Advocate Atrium Health, Charlotte, NC,
November 2023-Present; Director of Anesthesia, Atrium Health,
Charlotte, NC, April 2017-November 2023.
Position Statement:
Since
my entry into CRNA practice 20 years ago, I continue to see many of the
concerns from that time as the same concerns we experience as a
professional organization and profession today. We remain unknown to
many even though we provide most of the anesthetics in this country.
The AANA has made tremendous strides in bringing nurse anesthesia
practice to the forefront as the choice for high-quality,
cost-effective anesthesia care, but we still have much work to do.
The
majority of my CRNA career has been aligned with advocating for our
profession and the CRNAs in North Carolina as well as those CRNAS that
I work beside daily in my large healthcare system. The AANA Strategic
Plan identifies that AANA members are central to the success of our
organization as we focus on removing practice barriers in every state,
ensure members have a voice as we look for parity in anesthesia
provider reimbursement, and assure that we have a seat in designing
healthcare policy. Our success is dependent upon our members and the
ability to utilize the strength of our membership to get the message to
those that do not know our value.
My
current role as a CRNA provider is one of the most valuable assets that
I possess in advocating for our worth to patients, surgeons, and the
surgical teams that I work alongside, but we cannot stop in our comfort
zone of the surgical suite. I have taken the opportunity over the
course of my career to partner with other APRNs and medical
professionals outside of my immediate circle to bestow the value that
CRNAs offer, not only as the clear choice in providing safe,
high-quality, cost-effective anesthesia care, but also as the subject
matter expert on perioperative care and the contributions we can bring
to a healthcare organization.
The
key to our future success is to engage not only our members to advocate
for our profession, but also to role model that advocacy outside of our
comfort zone. My recent appointment to the North Carolina Commission of
Public Health will allow me to provide valuable feedback and
information to those with whom I serve and to promote the CRNA
profession while also educating others to the benefit of CRNA practice.
Living in a state that has fought scope of practice battles for many
years, I believe the key to our future success as a professional
organization will be to continue to engage those stakeholders at the
state and national level to help achieve the strategic goals of the
AANA for the benefit of the members. As my home state recently passed
Medicaid expansion, I see no greater opportunity than to educate many
stakeholders to the contribution we as anesthesia providers can bring
to caring for many that did not have access to safe, cost-effective
anesthesia care in the past.
I
humbly ask that you consider my past accomplishments in advocating for
our profession and my past as well as current service on AANA
committees to speak to my commitment to this profession, organization,
and our members. I ask that you give me the opportunity to mirror the
current commitment that I bring to my professional job role to
represent you with that passion at the national level by affording me
your vote as an AANA director.

Position Statement:
When
I first became involved in my state association in 2009, I anticipated
only being involved for a year, maybe two. I can recall the drive back
from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh after my first meeting. I remember saying
to myself, “This is definitely not for me.” It is hard to believe 15
years later that I have served in many differentcapacities for PANA and
continue to be as involved as ever in our state mission. I was asked to
be on the AANA Government Relations Committee (GRC) in 2015 and have
remained an active participant for the following four years. I have
been able to share my many experiences as a state leader, both good and
bad, with many others throughout the country. Unfortunately for our
association, there were many objectives that lay before us.
In
regard to the legislature, Pennsylvania is a very conservative state in
reference to advanced practice providers. This became very evident when
I was appointed the PANA Government Relations Committee Chair months
after joining PANA. Since joining the GRC I have become captivated by
healthcare within state politics, most of which were some of the most
significant encounters I faced as PANA president.
Starting
my tenure as president I was faced with my first obstacle immediately,
which involved a state bill and proposed limitations on CRNA practice
in Pennsylvania. I took this opportunity to reintroduce our association
to the Pennsylvania anesthesiologists, as this meeting hadn’t been
proposed in many years and was quite a feat in light of our differences
of opinion. Upon our meeting, I took the focus off the “us versus them”
and focused on the “we.” This communion is imperative in a large state
where the anesthesia care team model is commonplace.
During
this hurdle I found it encouraging working with such outstanding
colleagues and board members and together we fought for our practice.
Included in my PANA involvement, we facilitated the hiring of a
management team, legal counsel, lobbying group, and a media relations
firm to optimize our efficiency as an association. I worked diligently
with the AANA State Government Affairs (SGA) staff and was impressed
with the support that the national office provided Pennsylvania. I was
also given the task of formulating a request for proposal (RFP) for the
lobbying group, choosing firms to send the RFP, as well as presenting
the responses to the board. This was all accomplished with the
constant help and advice of the AANA SGA Division.
Having
the opportunity to lead over 3,000 members of PANA, I have the
necessary experience to appropriately represent the AANA as director. I
feel that an important part of being a CRNA is passing on our knowledge
to ensure this rewarding profession. I encourage students at the
University of Pittsburgh School of Nurse Anesthesia, where I am adjunct
faculty, to maintain their enthusiasm and continue to stay involved in
the local district, state, and national levels to continue to work for
our goals as a profession.
Given
my history, I want to share my experience and strategies to help guide
other state leaders so they, too, can make appropriate decisions to
help protect and advance the practice of CRNAs in their respective
states. I will use what I have learned as well as all resources that I
have acquired to be a conduit for information between the AANA and
state associations. I truly thank you for the opportunity to serve you
and this association.

become a paramedic in our town; most volunteers were basic first
responders. Our EMS service was one of two EMS services for the entire
county that spanned 920 square miles. The closest tertiary hospital was
2 hours away. There was no helicopter service in those days. I went
back to school to become a nurse and graduated in 1994 and served as
charge nurse and then a supervisor after my first year of working in
the emergency room and ICU at each facility until I moved into a
nursing director role in 2004. Current Employment:

Position Statement:
When
I look at the experiences and accomplishments of my colleagues, I am
humbled by their legacies. I am grateful to all who sacrificed, pushed
the limits, and gave of themselves in their time away from loved ones,
monetary sacrifices, and resources that were shared without
constraints. Their steadfast resilience andmentorship over the years
now fuels my commitment to make a difference for our profession.
I
believe that advocacy through direct involvement is what raises
awareness, visibility, and influence of our profession and the value we
bring and is the key to shaping our future. So, in a bold move, this
year I ran and won a state election, securing a position as a public
hospital commissioner in a health system controlled and led by
physician anesthesiologists, where physician anesthesiologists hold
both the chief executive officer (CEO) and chief medical officer (CMO)
positions. I will strive to influence healthcare policies that create
positive changes within the healthcare landscape. As our own Suzie
Newell once said, “True advocacy isn’t about your political
opinion. It is about creating solutions. In fact, my political opinion
doesn’t matter if it doesn’t contain a workable solution for a
problem.” I’m determined to ensure patients receive excellent,
cost-efficient care by promoting the benefits of CRNAs and advocating
for our profession’s recognition and inclusion as an anesthesia
provider in this health system. I am committed to ensuring the voice of
CRNAs is not only heard, but robustly represented for my 6-year term.
I
have been in healthcare for 34 years, with the last 11 as a CRNA. I am
proud to be a CRNA and proud to be one of 20 Native American nurses
(among all nursing specialties) with a doctoral degree. I bring a
wealth of leadership experiences to the table. I previously served in a
variety of leadership positions in my community and in healthcare, up
to and including executive leadership in a large health system, where I
served on numerous executive committees. Additionally, I have served
and chaired multiple committees, both state and nationally, and been an
officer and a member of the board of directors for several
organizations. Most recently, my track
record in strategic planning was showcased in Washington. Six months
after becoming the PAC chair, I successfully increased donations by an
impressive 600%, and our PAC faced the task of filing taxes for the
FIRST time ever in its history spanning over three decades.
As
a Washington Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (WANA) board member,
WANA PAC chair and WANA federal political director, I have demonstrated
a commitment to upholding the principles of integrity, accountability,
and transparency even when doing so is challenging and even unpopular
at times, but leaders mustethically consider the broader impact of
their choices overall on the members. As an AANA board member, I will
work diligently to create an environment where CRNAs feel empowered to
express their perspectives without fear of being marginalized or taken
advantage of. It is crucial that our unique contributions are respected, acknowledged, and integrated into the decision-making processes of the board.
Additionally,
I have worked to bridge gaps within the healthcare and political
systems to ensure CRNA voices are respected. Since moving to Washington
state 2.5 years ago, I have proactively worked to dismantle barriers
that existed among various healthcare professions. Through my efforts,
a coalition that includes CRNAs, various specialty nurse practitioners,
physician assistants, optometrists, and multiple lobbyists from various
healthcare groups now meets regularly on state and federal issues. The
coalition will soon expand to include physical therapists and dentists.
In time, the expanding collaborative network, which has already been a
value add for our current legislative session, will create
relationships that will empower tomorrow’s successes. I believe
strongly in partnering for purpose: To be intentional with our
relationships to remove barriers and increase our stakeholder network.
Together, we can cultivate a healthcare landscape that values
collaboration, innovation, and the collective impact of various healthcare professionals working harmoniously toward common goals.
In
summary, my background in strategic executive leadership, successful
committee chairmanship, and recent election to a hospital commissioner
role showcase my ability to navigate, lead, effect change and support
AANA strategic objectives. If you remember nothing about me except one
thing, this is what I want you to know about Commissioner Bender: The
profound motivation found deep in my “Lolly” heart is the aspiration to
leave the healthcare system better than I found it for my greatest
treasures: my grandchildren, Riley and Laiken.

Position Statement:
I
would first like to thank the several state associations for believing
in me and nominating me for the role of director on the AANA Board of
Directors. Maine Association of Nurse Anesthesiology, New York
Association of NurseAnesthetists, New Jersey Association of Nurse
Anesthetists, Connecticut Association of Nurse Anesthesiology, and
Rhode Island Association of Nurse Anesthetists, I truly appreciate your
support and faith in my leadership skills.
Over
the past 14 years, I have learned and grown as a CRNA, both clinically
and professionally. I have been blessed with amazingly strong CRNAs who
have mentored me, and most importantly, befriended me. Like many new
CRNAs, I was naïve to the professional issues that CRNAs face daily, in
the OR and the State House. I was focused on my clinical practice for
the first few years of my career but was encouraged by one of my
mentors to attend Mid-Year Assembly in 2014. I am not the only one, nor
will I be the last, to say that I was hooked. I have attended MYA every
year since and look forward to it each year. While attending my first
MYA, I was introduced to the leaders of Maine Association of Nurse
Anesthetists (MEANA), who took me under their wing and made me believe
I could be a leader, or should I say, I was a leader! I have served
MEANA in many roles: committee chair, director, and state president for
two terms. During my time on the MEANA Board, I developed and expanded
relationships with other leaders of nursing organizations, physician
anesthesiologist associations, and the dental organization. These
relationships were instrumental in the passing of several pro-CRNA
bills., including a partial independent practice bill co-authored by
the physician anesthesiologists. I have dedicated the past decade to
the promotion and protection of CRNA practice and will continue to
advocate for CRNA practice in the State of Maine and across the
country.
I have served on several committees in the AANA,
including serving as the chair of the Leadership Identification
Committee, and have learned about our association, the decorum in Board
meetings, and the bylaws that govern our professional association.
These years of service have taught me valuable lessons about
leadership, honesty, trust, relationships, and integrity, all values I
will bring to the AANA BOD.
I
believe our profession is strong. We provide safe, cost-effective care,
and with dedicated members, we can achieve the goal of full practice
authority in all areas of practice. We must unite as an organization,
look to the future, and work to make sure every patient and citizen
knows what a CRNA is and what we bring to healthcare.
I
have dedicated the past 10 years to serving our state and national
associations and look to bring that experience to the Board of
Directors. I am an advocate, leader, mentor, educator, and clinician
who works every day to protect and promote CRNA practice. I know that
we owe a debt of gratitude to our Founding Mothers and the strong CRNA
leaders who have come before us, without them our path would have been
very different. We have much to learn from them and can continue to
build on their successes. With innovative thought, knowledge, and a
willingness to work hard the potential for promotion of our profession
is vast. I look forward to being a part of the future of the AANA.

name is Susan Hall, DNP, CRNA, and I humbly ask for your vote of
confidence as AANA director at large. I am a long-standing active
member of the AANA, currently serving on the Continuing Education
Committee and Massachusetts Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (MANA),
currently as an emeritus board member and Professional Development
chair. I seek to serve the membership by leading from a position of
unity, opposing practice barriers, supporting regional and national
CRNA priorities and representing the membership’s collective voice. I
am aligned with AANA’s mission to promote and protect practice and the
vision of member-centered service and advocacy. I share the
transformational philosophy that nurse anesthesiologists’ individual
and shared perspectives are key to our association’s success.
Awareness
of inequities and practice restrictions began early in my training. I
was inspired to practice at my fullest scope, understand state and
federal issues, and seek mentorship with the desire to be a positive
change agent. This led me to conduct doctoral research examining
registered nurses’ difficult transition to SRNAs and forged a path of
advocacy. I enjoyed continuous learning, impactful mentor/mentee
relationships and growth. I was afforded diverse leadership roles
including assistant and chief CRNA, New England Assembly of Nurse
Anesthesia (NEANA) vice chair, multiple MANA roles over five years
including director and president, assistant clinical professor and
director of Clinical Education at Northeastern University Boston, MA.
I
believe my background as a nurse anesthesiologist, clinician,
preceptor, educator, leader, and advocate make me a great candidate to
serve your interests and represent YOU.
I
practice clinical anesthesia in Massachusetts and am part of a strong
unified nurse anesthesiology team within an anesthesia care team model
that exemplifies the power of a collective unified voice. My
leadership, advocacy andeducation roles include student program and
research leader, preceptorship and staff education, AANA CEU
management, contract negotiation, and policy work. In my journey to my
current group, I experienced many challenges that most of us have
faced, inherent with anti-CRNA rhetoric, practice restriction and
discrimination, group structure changes, and essentially
non-patientcentric policies.
My
passion for quality professional development remains steadfast and is
comprehensively reflected in my career. We need to continue to ensure
access to highquality continuing education that is accessible,
affordable and meets the criteria of certification and recertification.
I have managed a multitude of educational events at the state and
regional level that were well attended and favorably evaluated.
Northeastern’s
faculty team is unified and exemplary, promoting healthy team dynamics,
inspirational mentorship, and fair and equitable policies. As an
educator, it is rewarding to share the journey of an RN to CRNA and to
witness the transformation into anesthesia providers and
profession/practice advocates. In my presidency, we re-established the
strong connection between the anesthesia programs in Boston and the
MANA work by representing their voice, sponsoring attendance at MANA
and AANA events, and strategically positioning them within the state
associations. As director of clinical education, I am fortunate to
engage with CRNA preceptors, coordinators, and chiefs, across New
England from 34+ clinical sites ranging from independent to ACT models.
They educate me on the needs of their practice and aid me in
understanding the pros and cons.
During
my 2022 MANA presidency, we won a monumental, 10-year legislative
battle of prescriptive practice and became liberated from Regulations
of Board of Medicine, successfully blocked anesthesiologist assistant
and title legislation, revitalized our organizational structure, and
increased CRNA and SRNA membership engagement. I grew immensely as a
leader, CRNA colleague, and advocate for quality patient care.
I
ask for your support as I believe I will make a positive contribution
to the AANA Board as your representative. I have much to learn, will
continue to seek experienced mentorship, and offer no personal agenda
aside from being committed to a meaningful membership experience,
advocacy for full scope of practice, equitable reimbursement, and the
freedom to provide unrestricted quality anesthesia care for all
patients. I believe in unity and a collective voice to represent all
CRNAs out there doing the work every day. Thank you for considering me
for director at large.

Position Statement:
I
served on the AANA Board of Directors, and with the knowledge I
attained during my tenure, I can hit the ground running. On many
non-profit boards, directors have longer tenures than two years to
increase the efficiency and stability of the board. It may be difficult
for some CRNAs to serve for that long in our profession; the AANA Board
is aware of the time frame and is responsive to the issue. I can devote
my time to the important work the board must accomplish without the
steep learning curve in the first year. Having served on a previous
board, I am familiar with the transition from serving on the board of a
state association to a national association. My passion for governance
and serving the association has driven me to want to serve again.
The
AANA member value proposition of dedication to the CRNA profession and
patient safety through advocacy, evidence-based practice standards,
professional development, and commitment to innovation has always
spoken to me as an AANA member. As a director, I will uphold these
propositions as I have the past 29 years of my career as a CRNA and
retired US Navy Nurse Corps officer. Therefore, advocating for our
profession and patients is one of the most important things we can do
through the AANA and our state associations.
My
role as an educator has permitted me to show resident registered nurse
anesthesiologists (RRNAs) how active participation in their association
empowers them and strengthens the association. Teaching leadership
skills and professionalism, enhancing their critical thinking skills,
and showing them how to become strong advocates for our profession
gives them the tools to start their path to becoming proactive and
having a stake in their future. In addition, mentoring CRNAs as they
participate in governance activities has strengthened the association.
These skills are valuable for our association. Leadership can be
learned and used in our positions, whether independent, military, or
anesthesia care teams. Working as a staff CRNA in a per diem position
allows me the time to participate in all these activities: advocating
for our profession, educating, mentoring, leadership, and remaining
clinically active.
Not
every CRNA will want to engage in the governance of the AANA, but they
will want to know they have a stake in it, as they have a stake in
their jobs. The AANA is membership-driven and has changed from the days
of Florence McQuillen’s top-down administration. While necessary at the
beginning of her tenure as executive director, it became a negative
issue. President Goldie Brangman began the work we must continue by
empowering the members to participate while taking leadership roles. In
her 1974 President’s Report, she wrote, “When members are excluded from
the decisionmaking process, a fertile field is provided for
rumors…which spread easily, eroding the confidence of the members
in their association and decreasing the potential effectiveness of the
organization.” Communication and collaboration with members are the way
to fulfill the members’ desire for “a sense of ownership of their
actions,” as noted in the cultural assessment in 2018.
The VA
issue is one for which I have answered the action calls and had many
conversations with members of Congress. As a board member, I will work
in any capacity needed to effect a regulation change. As a veteran,
changing the regulations to allow CRNAs to practice without supervision
in the VHA is a priority.
One
of the issues discussed in board meetings has been increasing the
applicant pool by targeting RNs in ICUs and allowing RNs to become
associate members. I agree with these plans and voiced it when serving
on the boardpreviously. It is a concept that is essential to growing
our workforce and not “needing” anesthesiologist assistants to fill the
anesthesia provider shortage. One of the issues CRNAs have stated in
the membership survey is that this is a challenge in our profession. I
have also worked on increasing diversity in the CRNA profession by
educating middle- and high-school students and nursing students about
nurse anesthesiology as a path to advanced practice nursing. They
cannot become CRNAs if they don’t know we exist. The board is
positioned to formulate plans and toolkits so that state associations
can implement them locally.
We
provide quality, safe, cost-effective care, and these facts must be
made known through advocacy and example. I humbly ask for your vote for
AANA director-at-large so I can continue the work. My vision is to
continue advocating for independent practice, increase a diverse
workforce and membership, and make decisions to keep our profession
relevant and our association strong.

Education:
Doctor of Nursing Practice, Augusta University, Augusta, GA., 2020;
Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Berry College, Rome, GA, 2015. Member of AANA: Since 2018. State Association Offices: Georgia Association of Nurse Anesthetists (GANA) Treasurer, 2022-23; Treasurer-Elect, 2021-22. State Association Committees:

Representative, 2018-20. Current Employment: Staff Nurse Anesthetist, Sentry-NorthStar Anesthesia, Newnan, GA, 2023-Present.
Position Statement:
Throughout
my young Nurse Anesthesia Resident and CRNA career I have believed that
advocacy is key to advancing our centuries-old profession. I believe
that we are well positioned to continue the progress we have made both
clinically and legislatively with our colleagues and professional
partners.
I firmly believe that advocacy and education start
on day one of every nurse anesthesia program. There must be a
grassroots effort to instill within our Nurse Anesthesia Residents that
their education is unparalleled and that our profession is key in
closing healthcare gaps within our system. To accompany this education,
we need to continue our efforts to educate and promote advocacy
with legislators, within executive suites, and with our professional
and organizational partners.
I
bring a grassroots perspective having served as the Nurse Anesthesia
Resident on the Georgia Association of Nurse Anesthetists (GANA) Board
of Directors. I also have had the privilege of serving as the GANA
Board of Directors treasurer as a CRNA. Still within five years of
graduating and becoming a CRNA I have worked hard to grasp an array of
collaborative and independent practice environments. I see firsthand
the work that all CRNAs do on a daily basis. I also see how safe and
cost effective we truly are in my solo and independent settings.
I
want to take this passion for our profession and promoting our
independent skill set to the AANA Board of Directors. Bringing a young
voice who has recently been through a DNP program, served on a state
board, and who works in an independent setting can elevate and bring to
life our AANA Strategic Plan. I believe that begins with forming
diverse and personal relationships with CRNAs in all practice settings
across the country. As a member of the AANA Board of Directors I want
to first take our message to our members, support and promote our
members and make positive changes based on feedback from our
membership. CRNAs across every setting and in every state should be who
we serve first.
I
also want to work to continue the development of relationships with our
legislative partners. We need to bring them to the table with us by
showcasing our skillset. The best way to do that is to bring them into
the healthcare system with us and show them our day-to-day operations
and how we truly are a pillar of the healthcare community.
Also,
I believe in promoting our profession to prelicensure, college, and
high school students. We need to scout the next generation of CRNAs. A
great way to do this is to partner with our CRNA influencers on social
media, taking our message to health fairs, into classrooms, and to give
these students, teens, and young adults visual and hands-on experiences
of what we do each day.
As
a young CRNA, I have a passion for the future of our profession. I want
it to flourish for our generation and for the next generation of CRNAs
to come. It would be an honor and a privilege to serve on the AANA
Board of Directors, and I will work tirelessly to support and promote
each AANA member and every single CRNA across this great nation.
